The mast determines how high a forklift can lift and its height when closed. Duplex and triplex describe the number of telescopic mast stages.
What is a duplex mast?
A duplex mast uses two main stages. It offers a relatively simple construction and good visibility and can suit moderate lift heights without restrictive doorways or ceilings.
What is a triplex mast?
A triplex mast uses three telescopic stages. It can reach greater heights while retaining a relatively compact closed height. It is common in high-racking warehouses or where the truck must pass through a doorway before lifting.
What is free lift?
Free lift allows the forks to rise a certain distance before the overall mast height increases. It is useful inside containers, trailers and low-ceiling areas.
Main differences
- Duplex: simpler configuration, generally for moderate heights.
- Triplex: greater relationship between lift height and closed height.
- Free lift: a separate specification that must be checked.
Which one do you need?
The choice depends on maximum placement height, doorway clearance, ceiling height and space above the load. Residual capacity at the required height must also be verified.
Practical example
If the forklift must pass through a low door and then place pallets in high racking, a triplex mast may provide the required combination. If it always works in a high building at moderate lift height, a duplex may be sufficient.
Check the capacity plate
Height alone does not guarantee that the forklift can lift the required weight. Model, mast, load centre and attachments form one safety configuration.
