If the maximum load is 2,500 kg, finding a forklift labelled “2,500 kg” is not enough. Nominal capacity is measured under defined conditions and may decrease according to height, load centre, mast and attachments.
Nominal and residual capacity
Nominal capacity is the load stated under specific conditions. Residual capacity is the actual safe load at a particular height and configuration.
Moving 2,500 kg at low height may suit one truck, while lifting the same load above five metres may require a higher nominal capacity.
Information required
Actual maximum weight
Include the product, pallet, container and attachment. Use the maximum rather than the average weight.
Load centre
A long load moves the centre of gravity and can reduce available capacity. Provide dimensions as well as kilograms.
Maximum height
State the top pallet position and the clearance required to place the load.
Mast type
Duplex and triplex masts change closed height and available lift. Doorways and work inside trailers also matter.
Environment
Indoor or outdoor use, gradients, floor type, aisle width and daily hours affect electric or diesel selection and dimensions.
Is a 2,500 kg forklift enough?
It may be, but only if the capacity plate confirms 2,500 kg at the intended load centre, height and attachment configuration. Otherwise a higher-capacity truck is required.
